A: You won’t believe this! Today, I spotted three rust free semi-old Italian cars!!!!!11!!!1!!!!

B: Big deal , the weather is good and some wealthy car enthusiast towed his garage queen Alfa back to the mechanic.

A: HOWEVER: All of them were moving under their own power.

B: This joke is getting old.

A: And two of them were Lancias...

B: This is getting ridiculous, we all know working, rust free Lancias don’t exist, they never did. Let me guess the third was an Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8A?

A: Umm, no it was an !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

B: Wat

The city where I live uses at least one Ape in the maintenance department. If you are born before year 1985 you don’t need any kind of driver’s license to drive with those in Finland. So maybe they have some employees that are constantly losing their driver’s licenses...

Over here you can already drive one with a moped license. I don’t believe we have a <1985 exemption, but I wouldn’t know as I’m <1985 myself and I got a moped license automatically with my drivers license.

If you are born before 1985 you are allowed to operate mopeds without any licences (since they are 15 years old). Younger ones have to go to a driving school for getting one. Driver’s licence for light vehicles (total mass < 3500 kg) will also include licence for mopeds (and tractors too).

That’s the one I got, the <3500 kg regular license. Had I not had that, I wouldn’t be allowed to drive a moped (or an Ape). Despite being born in 1983. Must be a difference between Finland and the Netherlands.

Maybe Netherlands has required a license since really early times.

My friend is from Netherlands and he told me that small trailers aren’t registered there. He has some light boat trailer in Netherlands that he wanted to pull with his Citroën GS that is registered to Finland when he is having his summer vacation. Rather surprisingly he was able to convince the Finnish authorities to issue a third license plate for that purpose.

If the maximum weight of the trailer is <750 kg (loaded), it won’t need its own license plate in the Netherlands. It will need a copy of the plate of the towing vehicle instead.

It was one of those as the towing mass of a GS is really small too. Here all trailers have to be registered but the light ones don’t need to be inspected yearly.

Was it also so that all trailers aren’t insured and the insurance of the towing vehicle will also cover the trailer?

I honestly don’t know. I haven’t towed a thing in my life, and refuse to do so until I get a proper towing license.

I do own a BX diesel with a tow hook. I believe it’s allowed to tow 1100 kg. I can imagine a GS having a considerably lower towing capacity.

Here the light trailers (<750 kg) can be pulled with just the light vehicle license. All heavier trailers require a special license. I was pretty lucky with my age as I got the trailer license with light vehicles as a “cheap special bonus” due some transition phase for a new road vehicle law. It’s pretty useful for transporting project cars.

Diesel BXs used to pretty common here but now you only see petrol powered ones (still not in every day).

I can tow everything I want, as long as the maximum weight of the trailer plus the maximum weight of the towing vehicle combined doesn’t exceed 3500 kg. I just refuse to.
